Religious Protesters
The Covenanters were opposed to the religious policies of Charles 1 (1625 – 1649) and Charles II (1660 – 1685), it was the interference of both these monarchs with the Church of Scotland’s independence that the Covenanters objected to.

Collection Overview
Many of them were willing to go into battle where they faced injury or death. If caught they could face banishment, slavery, torture or execution.
The conflict went on for many years and was only ended in 1690 when the new monarchs William and Mary, re-established the Presbyterian Church of Scotland
